Whip up this rich, fudgy chocolate mug cake in under five minutes using only your microwave. It is the perfect single-serve dessert for late-night cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tbsp milk (any kind)
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Find a standard, microwave-safe mug (about 10-12 oz size).
  2. Add the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt directly into the mug. Use a small fork to mix these thoroughly until no clumps remain.
  3. Add the wet ingredients: milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture in the mug.
  4. Mix everything well with the fork until you have a smooth batter. Scrape down the sides to ensure all flour is incorporated. Do not overmix.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips, if you are using them.
  6. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Cooking time varies based on microwave wattage; start with 60 seconds.
  7. Check the cake; it should look set on top but still slightly moist. If it is still very wet, microwave in 10-second increments until done. Be careful not to overcook, or it will become dry.
  8. Let the mug cake cool for one minute before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

  • For a fudgier texture, reduce the milk by 1/2 teaspoon.
  • This recipe is a great base for a quick dessert in under 5 minutes.
  • Top your finished mug cake with a scoop of ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra treat.
  • If you want a protein mug cake, substitute 1 tablespoon of flour with 1 tablespoon of your favorite protein powder.
