Make fresh, creamy, and tangy tartar sauce from scratch in under five minutes. This quick recipe uses simple ingredients like mayonnaise, pickles, capers, and lemon juice, perfect for serving with fried fish or crab cakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup good quality mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped dill pickles or sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the mayonnaise in a medium bowl.
  2. Add the chopped dill pickles or relish, chopped capers, fresh lemon juice, parsley, Dijon mustard, and black pepper to the bowl.
  3. Stir all ingredients together until they are fully combined and the sauce is smooth.
  4. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more lemon juice for tang or pepper for spice.
  5. Cover the bowl and chill the tartar sauce for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to blend.

Notes

  • For a sweeter sauce, use sweet pickle relish instead of dill pickles.
  • If you do not have fresh parsley, you can substitute 1 teaspoon of dried parsley, but fresh provides better flavor.
  • This sauce tastes best when made ahead of time, allowing the pickle and caper flavors to fully incorporate into the mayonnaise base.
