Ingredients
Scale
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 (14.5 ounce) can French fried onions, divided
2 (14.5 ounce) cans green beans, drained
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a Southern twist)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth. This is your creamy base.
Stir in the drained green beans and half of the French fried onions into the soup mixture. If you are using cheese, fold it in now.
Pour the mixture into your prepared casserole dish.
Bake for 25 minutes.
Remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining half of the French fried onions evenly over the top.
Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
You can make this classic green bean casserole ahead of time. Assemble the entire dish, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add 10 minutes to the initial covered baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
For a Southern green bean casserole style, substitute the milk with half-and-half and add 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese to the bean mixture.
If you want to try an air fryer green bean casserole, use a smaller oven-safe dish and cook at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes, topping with onions for the last 5 minutes.
