You can make perfect, golden, fluffy French toast quickly using basic pantry ingredients. This simple recipe delivers a custardy center and crisp edges every time you cook.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large slices of bread (Brioche or Texas Toast work best)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for the griddle

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until the mixture is uniform. This is your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt until it sizzles slightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak; you want the center custardy, not soggy.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot, buttered skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with the remaining slices, adding a little more butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
  6. Serve your easy French toast immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thicker-cut bread.
  • If you want a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup for a classic sweet breakfast treat.
