Whip up this easy, no-cook recipe for a rich, velvety hot cocoa mix using simple pantry staples. This big batch mix tastes better than store-bought and is perfect for gifting or keeping on hand for cozy winter beverages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 1 cup powdered milk (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, deepens chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk (if using), salt, and espresso powder (if using).
  2. In a very large bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cocoa powder first. Whisk them together thoroughly to break up any lumps in the cocoa.
  3. Add the powdered milk, salt, and instant espresso powder to the bowl.
  4. Whisk all ingredients together for at least two minutes. You must mix well to distribute the sugar and cocoa evenly throughout the batch.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to airtight containers. This mix stores well in the pantry for several months.
  6. To prepare one serving, mix 1/4 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir until completely dissolved and enjoy your rich, homemade hot chocolate.

Notes

  • For a richer, more decadent cup, use hot milk instead of water when preparing.
  • If you skip the powdered milk, you create a simple hot chocolate powder that works well for those avoiding dairy.
  • This mix makes an excellent chocolate gift in a jar; layer it with mini marshmallows for presentation.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar to your preference when mixing your personal serving.
