Make incredibly tender, juicy shredded pork using your slow cooker. This easy recipe is perfect for meal prep, tacos, or big game day gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4-5 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (for finishing)

Instructions

  1. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. This helps the rub stick better.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper to create your dry rub.
  3. Thoroughly coat the entire pork shoulder with the rub, pressing it in firmly.
  4. Place the seasoned pork shoulder into the basin of your slow cooker.
  5. Pour the chicken broth or apple cider vinegar around the pork, not over the top of the rub.
  6. Cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or until the pork is easily shreddable with a fork. Do not lift the lid during the first 6 hours.
  7. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board. Discard any large pieces of visible fat.
  8. Shred the pork using two forks. It should fall apart easily.
  9. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker. Add your favorite BBQ sauce and stir to combine thoroughly.
  10. Cook on HIGH for an additional 15-20 minutes, uncovered, to allow the sauce to heat through and slightly thicken.
  11. Serve immediately on buns for classic BBQ pulled pork sandwiches or use for meal prep protein.

Notes

  • For the juiciest results, aim for an internal temperature of 195°F to 205°F before shredding, though the low and slow cooking time usually guarantees tenderness.
  • If you prefer a tangier flavor, use apple cider vinegar instead of chicken broth in the slow cooker.
  • Save the cooking liquid left in the slow cooker; you can drizzle a little over the shredded meat for extra moisture if needed.
