Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) day-old bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup chopped apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and apple mixture. Gently toss to coat all the bread cubes evenly.
  5. Let the mixture sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
  6. Pour the melted butter and caramel sauce over the bread mixture. Stir gently to distribute.
  7. Pour the entire mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  8. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the pudding is set and golden brown on top.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving.
  10. Serve warm, perhaps with an extra drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Using day-old bread helps the pudding absorb the custard mixture better.
  • You can use any type of apple you prefer, such as Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of bourbon or rum to the custard mixture.
  • This dessert is delicious served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
